Sheriff: Deputy Should Be Charged With Felony DUI
(CBS) RIVERSIDE, Calif. A veteran sheriff's deputy involved in a traffic collision while off duty in Rancho Mirage last month should be charged with felony DUI, the Riverside County sheriff said Friday.
A sheriff's department investigation into the Sept. 24 injury collision involving Richard Kamstra, a 16-year veteran of the department, has been forwarded to the District Attorney's Office, Cpl. Dennis Gutierrez said.
Kamstra was placed on paid administrative leave after the crash at Dinah Shore and Mission Hills drives in Rancho Mirage.
"I am forwarding this case to the district attorney with a recommendation that this case result in a felony (DUI) filing," Riverside County Sheriff Bob Doyle said in a statement.
"I want the public to know that we went to great lengths to ensure that this investigation was conducted without regard to the employment status of Sgt. Richard Kamstra," Doyle said.
"Our investigation of this incident was above reproach," he said.
Doyle said he also ordered an administrative probe into Kamstra's previous off-duty conduct.
