Three Santa Clarita Valley motorists were arrested late Friday night for allegedly driving under the influence while sheriff's deputies were conducting a checkpoint.
The DUI checkpoint - part of the station's monthly drinking and driving suppression efforts - screened 856 motorists on Lyons Avenue, just west of Avenida Dorena in Newhall.
Seven motorists were detained for further testing and of those, three were arrested, said Detective Tony Arnold of the SCV Sheriff's Station.
The station's deputies conduct at least one DUI checkpoint and a saturated patrol each month, with the help of a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety's Business, Transportation and Housing Agency.
In 2005, 145 people were arrested in the Santa Clarita Valley for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, according to statistics from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station.
This year, two people have been arrested in the Santa Clarita area for vehicular manslaughter while allegedly driving under the influence.
John Galvan was arrested in connection with the death of a man at Pyramid Lake while Galvan was reportedly driving a boat while under the influence of alcohol.
In August, a Saugus teen was arrested for the death of two motorists on Interstate 5. Chelsea Arcos, 19, allegedly struck and killed two people with her pickup truck after driving home from a Lebec bar.
Both Galvan and Arcos have pleaded not guilty to the charges and both have posted bail.
